Partner Placement: Lad Lake

What’s your name, organization and role? And how many council members do you host?

My name is Dani Bald, and I’m the growth and development coordinator for Lad Lake. We are currently hosting two youth council members.

What have you learned from working alongside youth in decision-making spaces?

I have learned that when it comes to getting through to youth, another youth’s perspective can be far more powerful than an adult’s.

Can you share an example of how a young person’s perspective shaped or influenced your team’s work?

The AYC members have been helping us start a youth council focused on amplifying youth voice and decision-making. They’ve also actively reviewed our policies and provided input on how to make them more youth-friendly and inclusive. Their insights helped us identify gaps we hadn’t noticed and have helped shape the structure and priorities of the council. By incorporating their ideas, we were able to create a space where young people have real influence, ensuring our programs are more responsive to their needs and perspectives.

How has this placement challenged or expanded your understanding of youth leadership?

I’ve realized that youth have so much to offer, including their lived experiences and their understanding of what other young people might need or want.

What strengths or insights have you noticed youth bringing to the table?

Youth are motivated to do well and offered thoughtful perspectives on what it would be like if they were in the same position as the youth we serve.
